Change in ideas

As our group this year was to big for the course, we decided to separate into a group of 2. As we have done this, our ideas have changed originally from an action genre. We have now decided to make a horror trailer as we felt as though many people are doing different to this. A horror will enable us to explore a more creative side to film making as well as being able to incorporate some of the conventions which are expected of a horror. For example, we will have a female who is very dependent as though she is the victim and needs saving as well as some dark lighting and mysterious character.

We feel as though a paranormal or spiritual theme would work well as these are quite challenging in the sense of being able to make things work without being seen. At this point in time we are currently planning to make something that will include both an angel and devil so that the horror side is portrayed differently. We would not have someone to act out the angel as this would not be as effective whereas the devil we may have to get someone to be able to make the noises so that it seems more realistic. As our group this year was to big for the course, we decided to separate into a group of 2. The earliest conventions of horror films are that there vivid imaginations, of visuals of ghosts, in shadow shapes, who were connected with the emotional side of an indivduals fear. Val lewton's theory of "less is more " so having low budgeted films to be more successful.

American versions of the The grudge (2004) and The Eye (2008) were banned in China from the market. Then the zombie convention merged back onto the 2000s as this makes it more developed in more early years. The biggest trend returned of graphic violence which were group as low budget films.

The extent of this trend was the developed in horror genre which emphasised on torture, suffering and violent deaths, with films such as Ghost Ship (2002), Eight Legged Freaks (2002). Remakes became more popular in the 2000s as films such as Dawn of the dead as well as the The Tobe Hooper's classic The Chainsaw massacre (2003).
In 2010, the remakes remained popular and the footage style which features Slender Man which became further successful on Youtube, which became popular at the beginning of the decade, Horror has become more dominant on TV such as: The Walking Dead, American Horror Story and The Strain, so popularity of horror films have had success on television series. The Cabin in the Woods (2012) returned to the slasher genre, intended also as a critical part of torture porn.

Our genre for our film trailer

We have decided that a horror trailer would allow us to explore our creativity both with the film making and  the editing. We are initially thinking about making a paranormal type trailer where we will include the devil as our antagonist where the character will cause fear in the other characters and will potentially cause harm to them. We can do this by using prosthetic's and therefore making any cuts or grazes seem real.We will try and practice this before filming to make sure we know what we want the outcome to look like. This will be effective because it will look realistic and make the viewing experience better. Our main outcome of this trailer is to make it scary and jumpy so that the audience will become more tensed and therefore further engaged. By making the main antagonist dark and creepy will add scariness to our trailer and is also something which the audience may expect. However, we want to add something that the audience will not necessarily expect to see so that the trailer becomes more effective and therefore engages them.

We have taken some inspiration from these films as these include the devil as the main antagonist even though the audience cannot see him. This also creates tension for the audience as they will become fearful and will want to see the rest of the film. We think that this will be a good idea to follow in some aspects so that the conventions of a horror are correctly followed so that we create a trailer that looks realistic. These posters show the dark lighting and the use of red writing to connote danger and fear, conforming to the conventions of a horror film.

Initial ideas

We are thinking of doing a trailer for an action genre as this will challenge us to create something exciting and engaging to a broader audience. The convention of action trailers included of weaponry being used, fight scene, long shot and close ups of explosions. The target audience for the action films would usually be aimed at males aged of young adults and middle aged, as there common interest includes these convention, so would intrigue them into watching the film.

We have taken inspiration from The Avengers and The Equilizer as these trailers creates suspense and builds tensions throughout, further engaging the target audience. These trailers both include fast paced editing and fighting scenes which are conventions of an action. They both also hold the attention of the audience so that they would want to go and see the film to find out what happens. This is usually done by the music being fast paced and usually creating tension or keeping the audience in suspense. Also the use of the actors names in these trailers allow the audience to see who is in the film and further engages them as they may have seen the films that they have previously been in and so will want to see these. In our trailer we will ensure that we have the names of the actors shown clearly so that they can be easily identified and therefore the audience will be able to notice them better.

Action trailer 3: Oblivion

(End of trailer at 2.27)

The trailer begins with the green screen talking about the audience who are able to watch the film. This is a convention of a trailer as the film rating website is shown allowing the audience to know who can watch the film, as this can be restricted due to the content shown in the film. The genre being an action film, the conventions would include of high technology used to destroy building or places, stunts being done, car chases, the location would usually be in a modern city there would also be weaponary used, fight scenes. This film would be aimed at audiences aged between 16-30 because the convention shown would make them intrigued in finding out about this mission where the trailer will show the most energetic parts.
Then the trailer begins with an establishing shot of a quiet lakeside, showing it being quite peaceful and relaxing as this starts to set the atmosphere of where the protagonist lives. It also allows the audience to be apart of the film as it it makes them sense what the film is like. This is a convention of a action film as the establishing shot allows to show setting of the film, giving the audience on where the film is going to take place. Then we cut to an old music record being played, with a guitar as it adds to the atmosphere of the scene making it a peaceful, stress-free.

Then we cut to to show the film studio, Universal studios, is an American film studio and is one of Hollywood's 'big six' studio. By having a well known film studio company allows the better outcome of the film. So the audience will be familiar with this company as they have seen it before in other successful films. Then we cut to a long shot which introduces the male protagonist, where he is just relaxing at the lakeside and this starts to show the audience what his life was like, at the same time we are hear a voiceover of him saying "I want to spend the rest of my life here" suggesting that he may have a job which shows that he is busy all the time, and at the lakeside, he doesn't have to think about it all. It also shows that he is happy where is as well. Also these next few scenes look very empty, with greenary with him being on his own allows him to have the freedom and independence so having to time to relax.

Then we cut to medium shot where suddenly the non diegetic sound stops as the male protagonist is being called by a women as an airship noise is heard, as this shows a sudden move of atmosphere as this will start to show the audience an insight to his busy, stressful life, as his facial expression changes as this aircraft is in the air unexpectedly. As a gets up with a gun in his hand as he aims at the aircraft ready to shoot it, then cut to show a point of view shot of the aim of the male protagonist trying to shoot the airship. Then cuts to a medium shot of the a women in a room with a table full of control, as she is wearing a dress which look very formal suggesting that holds a lot of power and control as she gives and receives information about this aircraft and reports it. The room is very plain and dull but shows the high technology that she is using shows that reliable and responsible with her job. Then black out when the male protagonist says " Got it on my way" as it then fades to him in a aircaft with a suit suggesting that he is on a mission and shows him preparing for this, and background shows a clear modern location where new technology is being used, showing a clear outlook as it creates a new modern look as he is around new technology.

Then we cut to an establishing shot of the location of which his mission will take place, it look quite dull suggesting that it can stressful and looks poluted suggesting that his work is very dangerous. But with voice over of the male protagonist saying "60 years ago the world was attacked" suggesting that he starts to give an insight of the history of the building as this is what will set the story of the film. The smoke coming out of it suggests that the building has been damaged by someone, with the grey suggesting that it goes back in time showing the damage it has caused as may have been bombed. The next few scenes the male protagonist explains about the war that they own but the world was left destroyed and left in a bad state, where it shows explosions, guns shots, using high technology to destroy things. This shows a convention of a action film trailer as it will show the main parts of the film where it will intrigue the audience to watch the film as these are key moment which will will hint them more. Then as the trailer goes on the women talks about leaving, but with a long shot him sitting at the end of a cliff think about why they should be leaving if they had won the war, which leaves both the male protagonist and the audience left think about why this could be, so it would make them watch the film to find out what happens next, as this is something that will confuse them. Then the screen becomes blank and the non diegetic sound of beomes more intense as he starts fighting again with women comforting him at the same time. This adheres to the conventions of a action film as women can be more manipulating and controlling and this is a more modern view of the women as they will have more power against them in order to get what they want.

Then as he is fighting he ends up being caught, we then cut to a medium shot of him being tied up with the background being dark suggesting that it focuses on him, turns to another medium shot of another protagonist will is introduced in the dark and revealed through lighting a matchstick, The yellow/orange lighting suggests that he is someone hidden or has been spying on the male protagonist, suggesting that he is about to reveal something unknown which will shock everyone. Then cut back to an extreme close up of his eyes, as he tries to think of he can recognise him, with the white lighting suggesting that what he is about to find out will benefit him later in the film.

The low angle shot of the man being tied up with camera tilted upwards suggesting that it makes the male protagonist weak as it looks like other people are watching as he is about to be reveal some truth about what he has been doing. The white lighting suggest that the innocence to this truth that he may not know about and so people around him will be shown as what he has done have affected these people in a bad way, but the male protagonist may not be aware of it. Then next scenes shown with the old man as the voice over explaining about the truth about who has been working with, as this allows to give an insight into some of the truth of the film as this will create a twist in the film, which the audience will be intrigued to watch the film.

We then cut to show some information about the film. with the blank screen the producers are shown, who are also well known from the other successful film. Having a range of producer allows them to know what there audience interests are from other well known film which have been successful from the past. Then we cut to show a close up of the women who turns out to be the antagonist of the film as she has a lot of power and control through the new technology that she has, and looks uncontrollable as she has power over alot things. Then we cut to shown a close up shot of a women inside a machine and looks like she is being manipulated by the others and as she breaks free, she calls his name as she seeks for help, suggesting that she is helpless but the male protagonist fails to recognise her. The old man explains how the male protagonist has been tricked and lied to in order get what they want and this is shown through a series of explosion and fights suggesting that the male protagonist will be faced with more problems unintentionally.

Then the camera cuts to show a statement which gives the audience an insight into film as this will allows the audience to understand more about storyline to the film. "Earth is a memory" suggests that it describes some of the past events which have occurred, showing that they have not been forgotten as it has had a major impact on the world. Then as the non diegetic sound of the horn becomes more intense as the next few scenes show him trying to reveal to the other but deny it, and don't want to listen to it, suggesting that they know about but don't want to hear it. Then we cut to a medium shot of the women angry and fustrated as her truth as been revealed, Her screaming shows that she is helpless for what she has done.

Then as more aircraft ships are on a misson a older women on screen saying "your still an effective team" suggesting that she tries to motivate everyone to show that they are all in togther for what they have done. Her facial expressions shows a cheerful side as helps to boast people confidence and manipulate them to continue there work. Then the next scenes shows him going against his own team and them retaliating to it by having this war. Then cuts to show the names of the protagonists, as it allows the audience to know who is in the film and is convention as this will familiarise them with well known actors which will make them watch the film more.

Then we cut to a shot reverse shot between the male protagonist and the women as he starts to question who she is, making him more angry as he has been decieved by a lot of people and want to know answers and the women is leaving her identity a secret which makes it worse for him.  Then cuts to show more intense fight scenes as the team want him back, but replies with "My earth is my home" suggests that he wants to independent and fight for his freedom of his world. The title of the film is shown at the end, in capital letters being quite spread out in white, suggesting that being spread out shows individualisation and white suggests innocence of people being apart of one country. With the small light coming out suggesting that there will be an outburst of energy, so fighting and weaponary being used to fight the country, but it being quite small shows that it can be defeated. This is a convention of any trailer as its important that audience know what the name of the film is so it stays memorable in there minds.

Then ends the trailer with the month release of the film at the centre as this will grab the audience's attension, at the bottom of the month release date shows the Facebook page and website allowing the audience to keep updated for the release date and more information about the film so it will tease them more to find out more about the film. Its important to have the release date in a trailer as it allows to keep the audience notified when the film is out to watch.
