Horror trailer 1: Ouija

The trailer begin by introducing the the film studio company, universal. Universal is well known film studio, which the audience would be familiar with as they released other well known films such as Jurassic world and furious 7. The genre of this film trailer is a horror, and the generic expectation include of intentionally scaring the audience building fear and tension. Also another element will show that the that the storyline will evolve from something from the past, will which will begin to scare the audience further as it would tend to be true story which has happened to someone. The audience for this film would be for both men and women aged between 15-35 as there interests would involve scaring themselves and finding out about something from the past.

Then the trailer begins to show a photo frame of women, with flower around her suggesting that she is someone to remember as she has past a way the pink flowers suggest that people now think that she is in a peaceful place, This conforms to the conventions of a horror movie trailer as it will show someone's death and the film will show investigation towards her , finding out more about there death. This allows the audience to follow along as this part of there focus when watching the film. Then the voice over begins with the female protagonist talking about talking to someone who is dead, this shows the strong link between the women in the photo and the female protagonist, as the camera fades to show a close up of her talking suggests her that she is strong willed and whats to know more about what happened to her, as by her expression it shows that they both have a strong connection which broke apart after the death, leaving the female protagonist in shock. Then the next shots fade in out to show suspense, shown through non diegetic sound children screaming suggesting this film has a reflection on scaring kid and possessing them. Which the audience would have to watch to find out why this happens. Then we are shown a two shot of another two characters who are quite close with the female protagonist who ask about whether the female protagonist wants to talk to Debbie who is the dead women. As the other women leans forward as she asks the question the lighting suddenly darkens suggests that something dangerous and mysterious may happen as the female protagonist with confidence says she wants to talk to Debbie. Then the camera fades to introduce the ouija board, and this starts to scare the audience as they know that its a spiratual will happen and this board will be an important part of props in the film as this will create suspense for them, and this is complemented by the non-diegetic sound, making the audience more scared as they start wonder what will happen when they start using the board.

Then the camera quickly cuts to show some cartoon pictures, and this gives the audience an insight into a true story, as it shows evidence of it through these drawn pictures, and these are shown in black in white signifying the past and how the film starts to show some recreations of it. the trailer shows these quickly as this would tease the audience on what to find out more about that past so this would be one way of attracting the audience to watch the film. Then the camera fades to show a statement which starts to explain some of the true story, as it starts to talk about the board, giving them more information about making them feel  more more involved in the trailer. This adheres to the conventions of a horror film trailer as the trailer will start to give information about the true story which shows its based in, giving them more background on the film. The statement is in gold and is the centre of the screen as this shows the significance of the board, with the gold suggesting an old tradition is being brought back to the modern society, where some people believe in it.

Then the camera cuts to show a low angle shot of the female protagonist and her friend going back to Debbie's house. The low angle makes the house seem more bigger and scarier, for the audience as this where all the action takes place with the ouija board, the lighting suggests something mysterious will happen as the female protagonist and her friends enter. Then we cut to show a close up of one of the main parts of the ouija board, and having the camera focused on, and allows the audience feel apart of the trailer as the transparent glass shows two different sides, which will be shown when playing the game. Then the screen flashes as it shows that part of past for Debbie as this allows the audience to get an insight on happened with her when she first found the board. Then the camera cuts to show Debbie hanging from the celing, suggesting that the board as taken over her resulting in her death, as she was messing around with board showing some sort of revenge against it. The dark lighting where the high angle is shown suggest the capabilities that this board and the ghost behind it can do which scares the audience further. The voice over of the female protagonist, take along the audience on what happened to Debbie, as this will make them feel part of the experience and get an insight on what happened to her, also the unusual creepy women screaming, creates more tension for the audience as they don't know what this board can do and who is controlling it.

Then the high angle shot of all of the female protagonist and her friends playing the game, Having the ouija board at the center allows to show the power it holds as all of the hand are upon it, suggesting that as they play the game they put themselves into danger. The hands suggests courage, as they what to find out what happened to there friend, the lighting is brighter around the board, as the the group of friends are wearing dark colours, creating the scare of the atmosphere for the audience as this board can do anything now that they are playing, will then start to show the torture it creates for this group. Then one of the friends says "this isn't a good idea" suggesting that she knows that something bad will happen, which suggests that she is scared about what the outcome may be, along with the camera then showing quick cut shots of the some of the past, which are in black and white. This allows the audience to find out more about the film, by knowing the past, reminding the audience that it is a true story. The birds eye view showing the group of friends look up as they play the game and suddenly something moves and look up with fear, this shot allows to show the power in which the ouija board holds when playing, as it controls people, and this shows that they have them in the ghost control.
The black and white images reflect the past of which shows that someone these key events have happened in the past, and the film recreates this, allowing to show the story to come back and scare the audience. Its also shows a evidence of it being a true story, making it more believable for the audience. This shows a convention of a horror film trailer as it will try to prove the story by putting a events into the past, allowing the audience to believe in the film more, so will start to scare them as the trailer goes on. Then another statement comes up giving more information on the past, giving the audience an insight of what the past is like. Then the trailer continues going back and forth from the trailer and past, with the non diegetic sound of the women screaming, as it creates more tension for the audience as this scares them, as the scream shows frightens the audience, and gives them an insight into who the ghost is, as it makes the audience feel apart of trailer as the ghost is with them as well as the group of friends. The camera is focused on the female protagonist, as this will allow the audience to engage with her and her feelings whilst blurring everything else out. Whilst playing the game as she talks to the dead, showing a comforting side, and showing her emotional side as Debbie was someone very close to her, and this is shown through her expression as she is upset about losing her, and says,"I miss you" suggesting that she is desperate to find out whether Debbie is okay or not, suggesting a caring side to her. This shows the the stereotypes of how women are presented as women are more emotional towards someone close to them and has been reflected here, shown though the female protagonist expression of being upset, so being open about her feeling, making the audience feel sorry for her. Then we cut to show them playing the game, and as they are playing they start moving there hands, and starts to scare them and start arguing whether someone is move it or not, this shows another side which may think that this story isn't true, so having this shows a realistic view of people who don't believe it, but the trailer will show a slow build up making this a true story. Then one of the says "hi friend", suggesting that communication with dead as it began with the ghost starting to torture them, then suddenly the lights turn out, showing the ghost in action, and starts to scare the audience more knowing that the ghost is present. This shows a convention of a horror film trailer as the lighting is important, as this will set the scene and the lighting will start becoming brighter focusing on a certain prop, whereas the lighten will be mostly dull, presenting the existing of the ghost, and shows its control over people.

Then the camera cuts to show the producers of the film, from two most successful films, Having these producer in this film allows the audience to recognise them from other well known films which they have produced, so having the experience of other horror film which have been successful, allows them to know what there audience's interests are, through there previous films. The text is in capital letters and the film names are enlarged so the audience can recognise them as they will be familiar with them. The background is showing parts of the board in red suggesting danger as this board will create a lot of problems. The two producers have put together this idea knowing that this will create a huge scare for them.
Then the camera cut to a dark room showing the female protagonist investigating the room to find clue about what could have led to her death. Then we are shown a low angle of her finding a camera which has some footage of Debbie, the camera cuts to a close up of the footage, where a point view point is also shown allowing the audience to be a part of the experience as the female protagonist, as the dark lighting around starts to show a mystery as something dark has been found, which can show evidence of her death and show her view of what had happened. The female protagonist as the voice over interacts with audience talking about Debbie and the camera footage which she had found. Then the next few scenes shows the footage in which was on the camera showing the introduction of how this ghost had been back because she starting playing the game again bring back the ghost, which is here haunting them now, having this allows the to show the past of Debbie, as she will be the main event to focus on in the film.

 Then after playing the game, the camera cuts to show a closeup of the wall saying "hi friend" suggesting that this ghost is now following all of them, after playing the game, showing the attachment it has created, as it starts to haunt them, with the flashlight suggesting this ghost is leaving clue too show its present, scaring both the protagonist and the audience, as this ghost is leaving hidden clues. Then the next scene show a women flossing her teeth and the camera zooms in hesitantly, as it shows the suspense in which then shows a women being stitched up on her mouth, suggesting that this ghost is now after all of them after playing a game, has made the ghost haunted them, as it shows that it has bothered, and now goes for revenge. The voiceover shows all of  them talking about how this ghost is after them all, and shows scenes where the ghost starts torturing them, making them scared about it's capabilities of this ghost. Then shows a dark room of a man looking, as the voiceover switches to an old women giving advise on how to stop this ghost, so they break the curse on themselves. Then the group of friends go back to house and the a close up of the board is shown as they play the again, suggesting they will do anything to get out of the curse of this ghost following them. The lighting is bright on the board as it shows the camera focusing on suggesting that the only way they will get out this torture is through playing the game.


As they play the game again they start talking about spirits, and bring them all together, then a cuts to show the release time for the film. Releasing it near halloween allows to show that this time is where a lot of people will dress up and is a suitable time to release as it can give them a scare when watching the film, putting the audience in mood for this occansion. Having the text in the middle allows gain attention toward it first as it alerts them to know when the film is going to be out. Its important to have the release date shown in in a trailer, as this will make the audience know hen they can go and watch the film as the trailer will hint parts of the film which they want to know what happens next.
As they are playing it starts to show more hints of the ghost being present and this would frighten the audience more it build tension and scare for them in what this ghost is going to do next.The medium shot of a stitched doll, presents ways in which the ghost is controlling them all, with the dark lighting suggesting its haunted and creates suspense in which the audience have to watch to find out what happens next.
Then as they are playing the game a close up shot is shown of the female protagonist as she picks up the piece of the board and places the glass towards her then suddenly shows a reflection of an old women who is present in the room, this starts to show the audience who the ghost is by scaring them through her way of scaring them through the glass, and the old women is screaming for help and her way of seeking that is through haunted others, to get what she wants. Then the camera cuts quickly as this creates suspension and scare as they have seen what this ghost looks like, and cuts to it coming closer to the female protagonist with the screams building up tension for the audience making them frighten about what is going to happen next. Then a closeup of the hand holding the female protagonist hand, as it shows who she is really after, The contrast of both there hands, shows the old women hands are very dark suggesting her state in which has cause her to be haunting other and getting revenge on them, as they have disturbed her by playing this game. Then its shows her controlling the female protagonist's hand through the game and suddenly the camera cuts as the protagonist stops the game. Then the next few scenes show the camera showing quick cuts of different scenes of which starts to show the tension of how the ghost starts to frighten the audience further as it shows the extreme cases which shows the level of extend this ghost can go to, in order to seek revenge.

Then a close up shows where the ghost is possessing others to get revenge on others, this shot shows her eyes being all blue, suggesting that the ghost controlling her into seeking revenge on the others, this is also shown through the background as she has carved something, which leaves clues for the others, as she tries to communicate with others. Then the next few scenes show more intense scenes where the all of them are being tortured. Then it cuts back to one of her friends who has been possessed as the ghost talks to them directly, as she rolls her eyes, and suddenly they scream and get up, suggesting that this ghost is getting really close, as its haunting them through people they are close with.
 Then the camera cuts to show the a title of the film, which is an important element for a trailer as it allows the audience to know what the film is called, as it will stay memorable for them. The title is in large in a rusted gold, suggesting the tradition of playing this game, and shows the past of this game, showing parts of it in the trailer, the dark shadowed background suggest something mysterious will happen, when playing this game. The font style is quite old and traditional with the gold, which shows the letters from the board. Then the next shot shows another statement suggesting it gives advise directly to the audience making them more scared, and is something they would keep in mind when watching the film
 Then lastly it shows the release date for the film at the centre of the screen, grabbing the attention from the audience, reminding them when them when the film comes out. This is an important  element to a trailer as this will notify the audience on when the film comes out, so they can go and watch the film. Then below it shows the Facebook page and the website for the film, and having this allows the audience to find more about the film, and keep themselves updated, and sharing things on Facebook and other social media allows the audience to interact and share information, allowing to gain a wider audience, who will be attracted to the film.
