Film trailer 3: The fault in our stars

The trailer begins with the green screen of shown from the from the film rating website. This is an important part when it comes to the production of a trailer, as the establishing the audience types allows what restriction for each age range and will be different for other trailers. The green screen with the text allows to show that this trailer is for everyone to watch, however it has been aimed at a specific audience. The genre of this film trailer is a romance, seeing the thumbnail, as there shows the two main protagonist that will star in the film, being quite close together, and immediately gives the audience a sense that these two will have an intimate relationship, and this follows the convention of a romance film trailer by having a romantic male and female protagonist, as this would attract the audience for women/teenage girls aged between 14-17, this is because the two main protagonist are quite young and so the audience can relate to some of the situations they may go through.

The trailer then open to show the distributor company for the film, alerting the audience on who was behind the film in order to release it. This something for the audience to expect in typical trailer, as the distributor company can promote the film through this as they were successful in the past with previous film, so the audience can already recognise who distributed the film due to popularity of other films. Also the non diegetic sound of the piano playing, throughout the trailer. The piano creates a calming atmosphere to the trailer and adheres to the convention of a romance film trailer, because the slow piano music, create a soothing and relax atmosphere which sound very feminine and as the female protagonist is introduced through the voice the non diegetic music complements this as it starts to Begin with her story which will make the audience sympathise with her condition has affected her relationships with others. This is something to expect as female protagonist will seek attention and comfort and this makes the audience side with her through the whole film trailer.

The camera fades from the distribution title to a point of view shot of the clear night sky, connoting peace and resemblance to the female protagonist current mood. The navy blue/black sky represents confidence and wisdom also with the trees in the rule of thirds on the left and right sides, the green connotes a fresh start, which may refer to the female protagonist life story and the voice over saying "I have believe that we all have a choice in this world" This suggest that she refers and gives advise to others about being about to have there own preference, in doing what they like. By having this the female protagonist speaks to the audience directly, making them feel apart of the film trailer.
The camera then cuts to a medium shot of the female protagonist lying on the ground, the background is quite spacious and empty in the night with the bright lighting, connoting innocence and purity and goodness, which slowly reveals the female protagonist personality to the audience and gives them a hint n what to expect when watching the film. The voice over continues to speak to the audience directly and this guides the audience through her experiences in her. This starts to show the age range for who watches this film as the female protagonist tries to guide younger people through different stages in life. This allows the audience to full involved in the film trailer as they will follow her and what experience she has gone through.

Then the voice over goes on to talking about one aspect of her life which has had an positive impact on her. The camera then slowly fades and cuts into the medium shot and the audience are introduced to male protagonist and the female protagonist together dancing, and the camera pans in and fades. This adheres to the expectation that the romance film trailers will have an element in which will show a couple in an intimate relationship and this is something to expect and this would attract the female audience as they may watch this to seek own advise on there own relationship and can increase there expectation of there own relationship.
The camera then fades into an over the shoulder shot of the female protagonist laughing and the lighting is much brighter, which reflects her current positive mood and the non diegetic sound continues at a steady pace, suggesting a slow progression that the female protagonist has taken in order to be satisfied with what she has.
We then cut another romance scene between the male and female protagonist, and this shows the parts of the female protagonist life which she is happy about, as it allows her to live a normal life, despite having her condition restricting her on her daily activities. The darker lighting reflects her intimacy, and closeness with the male protagonist. As the male protagonist grabs hold of the female protagonist is shows male dominate towards her, which is stereotypical to expect from the male, however reflects a caring side to him as they share something in common which beings them close together.

After the voice over states that "i much prefer that version as much as the other girl does" suggests that she compares herself other girls, and this shows that she tries to make herself seem as normal as possible to other teenage girls. This is something that the audience can relate to, as this film trailer is set in modern society, where teenage girls can relate when the female protagonist says this, as they may experienced similar situation as shown in the trailer. We cut back to beginning frame but as a close up of the female protagonist looking directly at the camera, making it look as she is directly communicating to the audience and with her staring at the camera makes the audience sympathize for the female protagonist because of her condition has restricted he to do basic things in her life.

As the voice over continues, the camera cuts back to an extreme close up of female protagonist eyes and when she says the last line the non diegetic sound of the piano hold down on one high key as she closes her eyes. This suggests that she may go through a flash back to important events that mean a lot to her, this would allow the audience to follow along with female protagonist as her condition of having cancer has vastly affected her life. The effect of using an extreme closeup shot of the female protagonist as it allows the audience to enter into intimate space revealing her emotions as they would not be obvious to see away. The close up reveals what the protagonist is experiencing, making the audience sympathise for her.  The lighting is darker around the frame and becomes lighter towards the middle of her eyes, this suggests that there is still hope for her even if she has the condition, as it will bring her down on doing certain things in life being her condition gets in the way. The camera then quickly fades into black as this will start to reveal what she is talking about, making the audience feel apart of the film trailer as she will take them through life events which are significant to her. The piano starts to stop and the voice over continues on it own and mentioned about "the truth" suggesting that she tries to build a connection with audience by letting them into her side of the story to her condition and how she deal with it.

The camera then fades to a closeup of her suitcase and the slowly fades to a medium shot of the female protagonist walking from the car and the camera tracks the female protagonist as she leave to go to her class.  The non diegetic sound of the piano comes back and the voice over of protagonist guides the audience throughout the trailer on what happens, giving life advise to the audience. The clothing the female protagonist wears is very casual, suggesting that she tries to leads her life as normal as a possible. The background with the car suggests that her condition has increased responsibility for her parents as they want her to live the best she can.
Then the camera cuts to the first meeting of the male and female protagonist and a shot reverse shot establishing the conversation they have, when the dialogue shows that they bump into each and and the female protagonist apologies and the male protagonist similes and accepts it, as it starts to hint attraction towards the female protagonist. A medium shot of the male protagonist presents visual introduction of him to the audience. This conforms to the conventions of a romance film trailer as its usually to see the first meet of the male and female protagonist which starts to show the connection build between them both. This is something to expect and would attract the female audience as they would see him as attractive and cute which would make them watch further on with the film.

A long shot has been used in this scene has it allows to show the setting of the film, showing a group of people sat in a circle, where it looks like they all have things in common, so it looks like a support group, where each member will talk about there condition and how they face it and what there fears are. The male protagonist is stood up and introduces himself to the group and this allows the audience to get to know him better through this. The non diegetic sound of the piano increasing the pace with a tambourine showing slow changes in the female protagonist life which indicates a positive step in her life. The camera then cuts to the female protagonist with a closeup with her smiling as she remember her first meet with him, then she looks at him for a few seconds and this shown from a point of view shot to allow the audience to see from the female protagonist perspective making them feel involved in the film. She is caught by the male protagonist then looks away. This adhere to the convention of a romance film trailer as it will hint small connections between the male and female protagonist, so the audience will know that they will get together some point in the film. The camera then pans and from an over the shoulder shot it shows the leader of the support group questioning and asking more question in order for them to express there feeling about there condition. The leader sympathies with them as there condition is not treatable and this shown through his body language showing respect for when the protagonist and he asks about his fears, and replies with "oblivion" suggesting that his fear of not being noticed by other and this reflects a weakness from his perspective. This flouts the expectation of how men are represented as his disability causes fear and worries about things in his life, which the audience can relate as these are issues which people do face and so they can relate to this. Then camera fades and the audience are shown the two protagonist outside together talking. The male protagonist is smiling at her and shot reverse shot has been used to establish the dialogue between them. Then a medium shot of the female protagonist with camera on side angle about 30 degrees and the effect of this is that it shows the awkwardness she feel as she says "why are you staring at me", and the non-diegetic sound starts to fade to show a response from the male protagonist saying that shes beautiful, this suggests he boasts the female protagonist self confidence and make her feel good about herself.

The non diegetic sound starts to increase in pace along with a choir of men making the trailer seem quite cheerful. The text appeared on screen allowing to promote the film further through the success of the author of the book. By having this it will allow the audience to recognize the popularity and success of the book which would intrigue them to watch the film. The font is in capital letters placed in the middle of the screen as it make it the centre of attention for the audience to read as this will grab there attention when watching the film trailer. The The second line of text has the colour blue symbolising peace and honesty and having this colour outlines "the best selling novel" as it allows the audience to identify this first when watching the trailer. The trailer continues to show the two protagonist meeting and get to know each other. This is something to expect as shows small affection between the two protagonist as they build there relationship, and the non diegetic sound complements this as it shows a cheerful and uplifting moment for them as they get to know each other, as the audience would want to see more of them in the film, so teasing them will make them more eager to watch the film.

The next scenes starts to show the downsides to the female protagonist's condition as she starts to explain about how things can go wrong very quickly as she explains this to the male protagonist as she talks about not getting close with him. The non diegetic sound changes to a very slow beats indicating the chances which she can live and starts to make the audience to worry about her as her condition can immediately kill her. The medium shot of the as the father rushes the female protagonist off to emergency room, showing the increase responsibility and care needed for her, because of her condition. The camera being behind them both makes it seem as if the audience are following her and this would increase her support as they will sympathise for her as well making them feel a part of the film trailer. The dark lighting suggests stress and pain which is shown as the female protagonist not being able to walk on her own and needs assistance

The camera then fades to show the expressions on the female protagonist parents, as they are worried and afraid about what may happen to there daughter, the camera slowly zooms in and quickly fades out and the next scene do the same, this shows the tension in which is caused by the by her condition. This would create tension for the audience as they have followed the female protagonist throughout the whole trailer and shows a caring and supportive side for her, making them feel like a friend to her. It would also make them sympathse for them as they care a lot for there daughter and knowing that she is not in a safe position with condition at this moment. Then the camera fades and shows a long shot of the male protagonist feeling down and lost and this is shown through his body language with his shoulders being quite slaughted making it look as if he is lost without her. This teases the audience knowing that something major will happen putting her at danger leaving the audience intrigued to find out what will happen next. The voice over talks directly to the male protagonist talking about how she doesn't want to hurt him, and this shows him that he cares for him and doesn't want to start a relationship in case it doesn't go well in terms of there conditions getting in the way.

The next few scene include of more intimate close scene between the male and female protagonist as they hang out more, also after the emergency room scene the female protagonist voice stops and the male protagonist voice over starts, this allows to show the audience another perspective on this relationship, which keeps them together and he expresses his feeling during this which complements well with these scene as it shows that he wont leave her at all. The two shot shown shows the determination on the male protagonist as he makes it clear that he wont leave her and as he stares at her will confidence knowing that he won't let her go, even if she wants to because of her condition. Having these intimate moments in the trailer at different points of the film teases the audience, as they want to follow along to see what happens next. The camera fading quickly teases the audience and leaving them to find out more by watching the film.

The blackout scenes with texts giving advice to the audience about general things in life, which would boast there confidence and feel more self-assured. The text composed in the middle in capital letters allowing it to grab attention and make them alert as it is directed at them, so it makes the audience feel involved as they will feel connected with the protagonists as they experience the same thing.

The trailer starts to end on the title and the production titles. The font used on the title is in chalk, this connotes that people can do what there want and the future can unplanned and unpredictable, so using chalk will show that you can plan how you want to live your future as you go and anything can happen. The words "fault" and "stars" have been enlarged and in blue chalk font to connote that these two words show significance throughout the film as both of these protagonist have a condition causing them to recieve extra support and having that with a relationship shows commitment and have high hopes for each other which the audience will see when watching the film. The colour blue connotes peace and trust which are both elements shown throughout the trailer as they show huge commitment towards each despite there condition.

To end the trailer the production titles are shown, to let the audience know who produced the film as they may recognise some of the producer who are well known for production of other films. This is something to expect when watching a trailer as its important to have the production titles helps to promote the film and make it more successful with well known producers with successful book, making sure the film is just as good so it keeps an equal level of success for both the book and the film.
